First issue on commercial mail

Most surviving first-day covers of 1951 were prepared for collectors. This envelope is printed stationery from a New York firm, cancelled on the day the United Nations stamps entered the mail.

It carries the 1¢ and 1½¢ values of the first regular issue and the slogan cancel “First U.N. issue 1951.” The stamps are doing postal work, not only commemorating it.
