Child Survival

John Isaac, WFUNA lithograph

The World Federation of United Nations Associations issued this lithograph on 22 November 1985, in the series Children Helping Children, with the United Nations stamps for the UNICEF Child Survival campaign. This impression is 191 from an edition of 1,000, on rag paper, signed by John Isaac and issued with the Federation’s documentation sheet.

Isaac, born in Tamil Nadu in 1943, was a staff photographer and photo editor at United Nations Headquarters for seven years. The sheet notes his work in Beirut, among Cambodian refugees, and during the famines in Ethiopia and Chad; in 1985 the University of Missouri recognised his photographs of the Ethiopian famine.

The photograph — a girl with a smaller child at her back — bears a first-day cancel of the United Nations Postal Administration in Vienna, 22 November 1985.
