Operation in the Congo

ONUC — Opération des Nations Unies au Congo — was established in 1960 after the Congo’s independence. It was then the largest United Nations force ever assembled.

This cover, cancelled on United Nations Day 1962, names the operation across a map of Africa with the Congo picked out in black. The two stamps issued for the mission sit above the map.
